The Mains
Way to Learn English is a private
international English language school
dedicated to offering students a unique Canadian cultural experience
in a safe, home-based environment.
We provide quality language learning
experiences,
through a combination of small classes, stimulating recreational
activities and quality instructors.

Dianne Mains B.Ed. is the school principal
who brings extensive experience with students from elementary school
to adult age. She has lived most of her life in Nanaimo
but has traveled extensively. She obtained a teaching degree with a
major in Language Arts, began teaching in 1978, and has taught in the
classroom, Theater, Music and ESL.
It was this love of teaching international students that led her to
open this school. Dianne has also worked as a realtor, a tour guide
and a cruise consultant. Dianne recently up-graded her qualifications
to teach TOEFL preparation and has helped many students successfully
complete their TOEFL Exam. Dianne's hobbies include traveling,
cooking, painting and going to movies.
Dianne has been involved in homestay since 1987.
Dianne and David have been married for 21 years and bring a
Christian approach to their teaching.

David Mains B.A. recently retired from a
successful career as an Investment Advisor and Financial Planner.
Educating clients through financial seminars was an important
component of his business. His new career as administrator and
business teacher at the school utilizes his skills as a businessman
and his interest in other cultures gained while serving in the
Canadian Navy. David is a native British Columbian and a graduate of
the University of British
Columbia. His qualifications are
enhanced by completing ESL courses
offered through Malaspina University-
College and the Global
TESOL Institute. He teaches the Business English course.

Sarah Lane B.A. graduated from the University
of British Columbia with
a Bachelor of Arts degree and has taught ESL
for more than 15 years in both Canada
and the UK.
She has taught all skill areas at all levels and particularly enjoys
teaching academic and exam preparation. She has helped students to
prepare successfully for the TOEFL, Cambridge
and IELTS examinations.
In her free time, Sarah enjoys reading, especially about history
and other cultures, and listening to music. On sunny days, she loves
to be outdoors, either hiking in the local mountains or working in
her garden.
